USPS First-Class Package International Service is typically the cheapest option for packages under 4 lbs, starting at $14.25. For heavier items, USPS Priority Mail International flat rate boxes offer good value. Always compare carriers as prices vary significantly by destination and package size.
Delivery times range from 1-3 days for express services (FedEx/UPS/DHL Express) to 7-21 days for economy options (USPS First-Class). Factors affecting delivery include destination country, customs clearance, and service level selected.
Recipients may need to pay customs duties and taxes depending on the destination country's regulations and the declared value. Most countries have a de minimis threshold below which no duties apply. For example, Canada is $20 CAD, UK is £39, and Australia is $1000 AUD.
Common prohibited items include lithium batteries (loose), aerosols, perfumes over 16oz, weapons, ammunition, and perishable foods. Each country has additional restrictions. Always check both carrier and country-specific prohibitions before shipping.
For packages valued under $400 or weighing under 4 lbs, use form CN22. For higher values or weights, use CN23. Commercial shipments may also require a commercial invoice. Forms are free from USPS or can be completed online with other carriers.
