USPS vs DHL: International Shipping Compared
Lower cost or door-to-door speed: how to choose for your shipment
The Verdict
USPS usually wins on cost for small, light, non-urgent parcels. DHL Express usually wins when speed, tracking or customs support matters more. DHL Express typically delivers in 2–4 business days to major markets, against 6–10 for Priority Mail International. Above about 5–10 lb, get real prices for both, because a discounted courier rate can come close to USPS retail postage.

What Is Different in Practice
- Handoff. USPS carries your item to the border, then the destination post takes over. DHL keeps it on one network, which is why tracking is more detailed. Read about the USPS handoff to foreign posts.
- Who pays duty. With USPS the recipient usually pays at delivery, and the post may add a handling fee. With DHL you can often choose to bill duty to the sender.
- Service gaps. Check USPS service alerts before relying on USPS. Global Express Guaranteed, the old USPS service delivered by a private partner, has been suspended since September 2024.
- Price. We removed a claim that USPS is 50–70% cheaper. The gap varies too much by weight and route. Use the rate calculator for a reference estimate, and get real prices before you decide.
