How long shipping to the Philippines takes

Metro Manila and Cebu are usually served by express in 3 to 5 business days, with Davao and other Mindanao cities a day or two later. Island provinces can add more. USPS hands parcels to PHLPost, and First-Class Package International Service takes about 2 to 4 weeks; slow local post offices and customs notices are the usual delays. Balikbayan boxes travel by sea container, so most forwarders quote 6 to 10 weeks from the US, with a longer cut-off for Christmas. Book by early autumn for a December delivery. Typhoon season can disrupt inter-island links from about June to November.

The ₱10,000 rule

Under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (Republic Act 10863), goods at or below the de minimis value of ₱10,000 enter free of duty and tax. The law lets the Secretary of Finance adjust the figure, and local retailers have lobbied to scrap it, so check the Bureau of Customs before relying on it for a business plan. At current exchange rates, it is nearer US$155 than the US$180 quoted in older guides.

Above ₱10,000, the Bureau of Customs assesses duty (0% to 30% or more, depending on the tariff code), and VAT at 12% on value plus duty and other costs. Example: a ₱25,000 phone at 3% duty: duty ₱750, VAT ₱3,090, total ₱3,840 plus any broker charges. For the same landed-cost logic, see duties and taxes.

Balikbayan boxes

A balikbayan box is a personal box sent home by a Filipino abroad, often a large door-to-door carton from a specialist forwarder. Under section 800(f) of the CMTA, qualified Filipinos can send personal and household goods free of duty and tax up to ₱150,000, up to three times in a calendar year, to family. The goods must not be in commercial quantities or for sale.

1. Buy a box from a forwarder accredited with the Bureau of Customs. Accreditation is your protection if something goes wrong.
2. Pack personal goods only. Ask about limits on phones, appliances and repeated items.
3. Complete the Information Sheet with the sender's passport or proof of status and the recipient's details, plus a packing list.
4. Keep the receipt and tracking reference until the box arrives.

A box from a non-Filipino sender or a business does not qualify. Unaccredited consolidators are a known risk, with boxes abandoned at ports, so verify before paying.

Tips for the Philippines

• Add barangay and landmark: many drivers navigate by barangay, subdivision or nearby landmark.
• Check who's calling: "customs fee" text scams are common. Pay only through the carrier's or BOC's official channel.
• Use a recipient's mobile number and ID: a valid ID or TIN is often requested on release.
• Consider a door-to-door forwarder for bulky goods: a 20 kg express shipment can cost far more than a box.

From elsewhere?

The ₱10,000 and balikbayan rules cover all origins, which matters for workers in the Gulf, Japan and Canada. From the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Singapore, sea boxes often take weeks fewer than from the US. Air cargo is faster but pricier. From Japan and Australia, plan on 3 to 7 days by express.
