USPS vs UPS: International Shipping Compared
Lower cost or door-to-door speed: how to choose for your shipment
The Verdict
USPS usually wins for small, light parcels and letters. UPS usually wins for heavier parcels, deadlines and business shipments, and UPS Standard is a strong road option to Canada and Mexico. Above 5–10 lb, discounted UPS rates can beat USPS retail postage, so compare real prices.

What Is Different in Practice
- Canada and Mexico. UPS Standard runs about 2–7 business days by road. Priority Mail International often costs less for light parcels, but the Mexico delivery leg is less predictable.
- Customs. UPS can bill duties to the sender on many lanes, and brokerage fees may apply. With USPS, the recipient normally pays at delivery.
- Availability. USPS acceptance is suspended to a changing list of destinations. See USPS service alerts.
- Guarantee. See the UPS delivery times guide: the guarantee does not cover every UPS service.
