* Reference estimates; add customs clearance. Major cities clear faster than southern/island destinations.
For a parcel of goods worth €100 (under the €150 duty line) sent from the U.S.: no duty, but 22% IVA applies to the value plus shipping, so roughly €22+ in VAT, plus the carrier's customs-handling fee (often €10–18). For a parcel worth €300: duty at the item's tariff rate and 22% IVA on (value + duty + shipping), which can add 30–40% to the landed cost. The carrier usually pays customs on the recipient's behalf and bills it on delivery — see duties & taxes for how the line items stack.
Yes. Since 2021 there is no VAT-free threshold — 22% IVA applies from the first euro of value. Only import duty has a threshold (€150).
Italian customs is more variable than northern EU countries. Clean, specific paperwork and a tax code for the recipient are the best ways to avoid extra days.
DHL and FedEx clear customs into Milan, Rome, and other hubs fastest (2–4 days). USPS via Poste Italiane is cheaper but slower and less trackable.
The Import One-Stop Shop lets online sellers collect EU VAT at checkout on orders up to €150, so the parcel clears without the recipient being billed on delivery — faster and friendlier for buyers.
