USPS vs FedEx: International Shipping Compared

Lower cost or door-to-door speed: how to choose for your shipment

The Verdict

USPS is usually the cheaper choice for small parcels when you can wait 1–3 weeks. FedEx is the better choice when you need a date, detailed tracking or a parcel over 70 lb. FedEx International Priority typically delivers in 2–4 business days to major markets. FedEx International Economy sits between the two on speed, so check it before assuming USPS is the only cheaper route.

Priority Mail Express International adds an option at 3–5 business days to many major markets, where available. Check USPS service alerts first, since USPS acceptance is suspended to a changing list of destinations.

What Is Different in Practice

  • Guarantee. FedEx's guarantee does not cover all services: International Economy and Connect Plus are excluded. USPS offers a date-certain refund only on Priority Mail Express International to selected countries.
  • Surcharges. FedEx fuel surcharges change weekly and have been high in 2026, so the base rate is not your final price. See the FedEx fuel surcharge page.
  • Reliability. We removed the on-time percentages this page used to show because neither figure had a source. USPS suspensions are listed in USPS service alerts.
