🇪🇸 Shipping to Spain from the USA
21% IVA on the mainland, a flat EU duty on small orders, and separate rules for the Canary Islands
Quick answer
- How long: 2 to 5 days by express and about 1 to 3 weeks by USPS to the mainland and Balearics.
- What the recipient pays: IVA at 21% from €0, plus a flat €3 EU duty per product category on online orders up to €150.
- Watch out: the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are outside the EU VAT area, so mainland advice does not fit them.
- Final mile: Correos delivers USPS parcels; Correos Express and private networks serve couriers.

USPS prices are official retail rates from Notice 123 (effective October 4, 2026). UPS, FedEx, and DHL figures are rough list-price estimates before fuel and other surcharges, not quotes, and a live quote can be much higher or lower. Delivery times exclude customs delays unless stated.
Reference list-price estimates before fuel and demand surcharges, duties and taxes, not quotes. Rows are derived from the France lane as a nearest reference, not separately published prices for Spain.
How long shipping to Spain takes
Madrid and Barcelona are the main express gateways and usually see delivery in 2 to 4 business days from the US. Valencia, Seville and Bilbao often take one more. The Balearics add a day or two by air or ferry. Canary Island addresses need extra days plus an import step of their own. Postal parcels clear through Correos and move onward once any amount due has been paid in Correos' online process; the wait for a recipient to pay is often the longest part of the trip.

IVA, the €3 duty and fees
The Agencia Tributaria e-commerce pages set out the position:
- Online purchases to €150: a fixed €3 per product category since 1 July 2026, whatever the VAT system. It is normally collected by the platform at checkout. If the terms say it is not included, the carrier may ask for it.
- IVA: 21% standard, 10% and 4% reduced. With IOSS the price includes it. Without IOSS, the carrier may require it before delivery, plus a handling fee.
- From 1 November 2026: an additional €2 processing fee per category, plus product identifiers on the declaration.
- Customs does not bill consumers: the Agencia Tributaria says it looks to the declarant, so an unexpected text demanding payment should be checked against the carrier's real tracking page.
- Returns: the €3 is refunded only for faulty or non-conforming goods, according to the same guidance.
- What counts is where the goods ship from, not a .es domain or euro prices.
Private gifts follow the EU rule: free of duty and IVA up to €45, sender and recipient both private individuals, and no payment by the recipient.
Example: €60 trainers with €12 shipping and no IOSS. Duty €3, IVA 21% of €75 = €15.75, so €18.75 before the carrier's fee. An order over €150 pays normal tariff rates instead of the €3; see duties and taxes.
Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla
The Canaries are in the EU customs territory but outside the VAT area and use IGIC, the local indirect tax with a 7% general rate. Ceuta and Melilla have their own local tax, IPSI, and sit outside the customs territory as well. That means a parcel from the US does not pay Spanish IVA there, and even one from mainland Spain needs a customs document. Ask the carrier whether a service covers the islands, and expect extra days and a broker charge. Many mainland online shops refuse these addresses for this reason.
Do not send
- Meat, dairy and most fresh food from outside the EU
- Counterfeit goods
- Weapons and controlled knives
- Protected wildlife products under CITES
Check first
- Medicines: personal quantities and paperwork
- Food supplements and cosmetics: EU rules if sold
- Electronics: CE marking if sold
- Alcohol: no gift VAT relief; USPS restricts it
More in prohibited items.
Tips for Spain
- Include the DNI or NIE: couriers and Correos often need the recipient's ID number to file the import.
- Write floor and door: Spanish addresses end in forms such as "3º B" or "Bajo". Without them, parcels in apartment blocks fail.
- Use the five-digit postcode: the first two digits show the province, so errors can send parcels to the wrong region.
- Plan around holidays: Semana Santa and August reduce business hours, especially in smaller towns.
- Consider a CityPaq or pickup locker: useful when nobody is home during the day.
From elsewhere?
Latin American senders often use local couriers into Madrid; the customs result is the same as for US parcels. From the UK, duty may fall away on UK-origin goods, but the €3 rules for sales and IVA still need checking per shipment. Parcels between Spain and France or other EU states have no customs. Sending from Spain to Latin America? The Mexico and Brazil guides explain what the recipient pays there.
Spain shipping questions
How long does USPS take to Spain?
Plan on 1 to 2 weeks by Priority Mail International and up to three by First-Class Package International Service. Clearance by Correos can add time if IVA is due.
Does Spain charge a gift tax on parcels?
A real gift of €45 or less between individuals is free. Above that, IVA is due and duty may be too.
Is the €3 per parcel?
No. It is per product category in the order, so a mixed box can cost more.
Can I use a US carrier to the Canary Islands?
Express networks reach them with a customs step, and USPS accepts mail through Correos, but expect a longer window and a local tax.
